I think you're also forgetting that at the end of the movie, when the Jews are evicted, the two of them leave too. "We can not stay among those who would do this to others" are his words if I remember correctly. Additionally he tries to bridge the rift between their families, only to be met with hostility. Fieytka (sp?) is an excellent example of tolerance.
