Despite a worldwide commercial release, Hell on Wheels did not manage to achieve any success other than charting on the Billboard Hot 100, at a disappointing #59.The song received positive reviews from critics including one where the song is described as, "an excellently produced follow-up dance single." The song has also received neutral/negative reviews like one which describes Hell on Wheels as, "hoping to cash in on the disco-roller skating craze that was sweeping the nation in 1979." NOTE from CHERsTyler: Cashing in? Cher had been into rollar skating for 4 years and was thus inspired to record this song....Cher was way ahead of the curve in skating and making videos.....when the original video was made, there was NO MTV, VH1 or YOU TUBE.In 1979, Hell on Wheels was included in original soundtrack to the film, Roller Boogie.Music videoHell on wheels is arguably the first professional video ever released by Cher, many believe that the videos for Take Me Home and Love & Pain are her first professional videos, but it's unknown whether Take Me Home and Love & Pain are recognized as promotional videos since they are recorded acts from the show Cher... and Other Fantasies. The video for Hell on Wheels was tough for Cher to shoot. She was required to skate down steep, mountainous roads while sporting a broken arm. In the video Cher is roller skating and being followed by a huge truck driven by two men which use the maximum speed of the truck to catch up with her. Following this, Cher convinces many people with different types of transportation to follow and take a ride with her."Hell on Wheels" is one of the 1970s pioneer rock videos to be produced in the MTV style before MTV itself existed. The video was premiered on the late night NBC television show "The Midnight Special." Promotional clips were also shown during a 1979 interview with Phil Donahue on "The Phil Donahue Show."ChartsChart (1979) PeakpositionU.S. Billboard Hot 100 59world wide sales 250,000So from 1979 lets lace up our skates and roll with Cher as she sings, "Hell On Wheels" here are the lyrics...CherPrisoner (1979)Hell On WheelsWell I'm hell on wheels I'm a roller mama I can slide down places that you never knew Try me on for size, at the rollerama If you tie my laces. then I'll follow you, follow you, follow you, OhCHORUS: See something I like, gonna go for it See something I want, I'm gonna go after it See something I like, gonna go for it See something I want,Let's rollhell on wheels, let's roll Come on and roll with me I roll till quarter to three yeah And let's rock hell on wheels, let's rock Come on and rock it with me I'll make you feel so free, yeah, Look out, look out, look outWell I'm hell on wheels, say I'm roller crazy I won't go too fast, I won't go too far We'll be high on wheels, if the room gets hazy Just look out for me,I'm your guiding star, guiding star, guiding star See something you like, better go for it See something you want, better get down on it See something you like, better go for it See something you want Let's roll hell on wheels, let's roll Come on and roll with me We'll roll till quarter to three, yeah let's rock, hell on wheels, let's rock Come on and rock it with me I'll make you feel so free, yeah, look out, look out, look outIf you see something you like, better go for it If you see something you want, you better, get down on it If I see something I like, I'm gonna go for it If I see something I want You know I'm gonna get down on it Cause I'm hell on wheels, I'm a roll on mama I can slide down places that you never knew Try me on for size at the rollerama If you tie my laces and I'll follow you Follow you follow you ChorusUseless trivia of note:The video Cher made for this song also is the first time in pop culture history that the THONG was seen on screen. 3:57 mark Cher in Lakers colors. I'm sure she made Jack Nicklaus proud in that picture.

discoguy79, I wish I lived then. Other than the fact there was $20/gallon for gas around '76, and the last half of vietnam. Disco would of probably catch me by storm. It's so dynamic. It slips me into a strange mystical, mythical motivational thought pattern...

this was one of those disco/rock hybrid songs that came out in the late 70s, i remember those days well, i was in high school, that was an era that can never be duplicated, you had to live through it to fully understand its meaning and impact, im glad i did. |
