Grew up near Pompey.Still got a soft spot for the city, especially the Naval heritage. All my life Pompey fans have been bitter towards Southampton. The REAL reason for the hatred is that for nearly all of the last 40 years Southampton have been in a higher league and "usurping" what pompey fans see as their rightful place as top club on the South Coast. If Pompey continue to be above Saints this jealousy may diminish at last.

arc20051.Portsmouth accent used to be 'ampshire but over the years, especially after the Second World War,many people from London were resettled in and around the city.Add to that the influence of T.V and you can see the change. There are still similarities with, dare I say it,Southampton, but that city still sounds more "West Country"
