i was there too! when his service crew got there the car still drove off the stage though - fair play to them boys. a 23 year old car is allowed to have the occasional hiccup, especially whens its still being driven hard

Note that the japanese record of 2007 was made with different conditions : many parts of the hill are not sandy anymore, but asphalt, so the grip is way higher, so easier to make a scratch...

I saw that driver John hanlon at Rally of the Lakes this year....the same quattro broke down at the junction we were on. Deadly car!!

Walter Rohl broke the record in 1986 and year later broke the record again, ahead of Michelle Mouton, it was 10 mins 47 sec. The quattro is a legendary car but having the engine front mounted means its handling is down on the corners whereas the Vitara is mid mounted and better balanced with upgraded suspension and more grip due to wider tyres. If these two cars competed in straight line the Quattro would outpace the Vitara. But its the cornering up Pikes Peak that slows it down. |
