They lifted his arm as a champion, what does this represent? What did the first guy put in his mouth, money?

Very Good Point. I completely agree with your point of view on this one. There is no doubt that the younger generation are interested in Foregin music, while theirs is dying. This is one of my main issues with globalization. Western culture would supercede the African ones. This madness brings tears to my eyes.

The people of Mali desperately want exposure and a chance to be known. Primarily because they want to go to America or Europe to make some money to help their families back home. Without exposure and promotion the old Malian djembe culture is being lost. Most of the younger generation now are interested in American music. When they see foreigners with an interest in their culture they begin to consider and value once again where they come from.

Yea it does bring an music and culture of Mali to the whole World. But we should ask ourselves. Do the People of Mali need or want this?Plus lets not kid ourselves exposure almost always leads to erosion.

In this case, the "strange" person is making an effort to bring the music and culture of Mali to the whole world, as well as promoting local musicians from in and around Segu, Mali. I think that's a very *good* thing!

A strange white person. I hate to say this but I'm always weary of White Peoples presence in Africa. Nothing good has come out of the first encounter. Its just sad.
