Training is great, but we always flat out refuse to "burn down" someone's property. I mean, if it's in the middle of a field, in January, with snow. Okay.. But w/ exposures, or dry vegetation.. No fricken way. Out here in the sticks, we'd be back at 3am for a Forest Fire that started two miles away.. and it'd be our fault.

Generally, things like this happen due to "officers" not listening to newer firefighters suggestions on safety issues, because they are too self-absorbed to realize that the way they've always done it ain't good enough. Newer FF's are generally trained with safety in mind, but the old timers rarely listen to anyone other than their peers. This time it was some paint and siding issues. With that gasoline, next time it may be a FF's family or the attorney's asking what they were thinking.

I agree that they were lucky that no one was seriously hurt. But I must say experince here woud have said no way on the entire training. There was no way that the barn could have been burnt down without causing damage to the other dwellings. This was a loser from the start. A state certified fire instructor was present and active during the training.

no...i would say most of them are stupid... any person would know that the pickup truck was way to close to that barn, even for a controlled burn. i noticed that the first time the truck was shown. they also waited way to long to move it. it was also a giant risk to go move the truck. these people are lucky no one got killed. stupidity and firefighting do not mix.

The fire department would be the responsible party. In this case since it is a Township FD the Township local Gov. would be along with the Fire Chief. If it was a City FD then the City Gov. would be along with the Fire Chief.

who is responsable to repair the damage?

The people are not stupid. I would rather say they lacked judgement in the possible out come along with a lack of experince in aquired structural live fire training. I personally know most of the people involved in this incident and they are no where near stupid.
