I love that metaphor. It reminds me of the idea that death was the 'prize' living beings had to pay for the benefits of sex (and love by default). Asexual beings potentially can live forever, just by making identical copies of themselves. Sexual beings gave up that kind of immortality when their offspring was a new organism, a mix of its parents' genes. Millions of years later, humans developed love as a reproductive strategy. So, after all "Eros & Thanatos are branches of the same old tree."
