Scofield's Ray Charles has my favorite Sco on it. Miles did want to keep John from playing behind the beat, but The Charles album is the best. Especially when he makes it sound just like Neville. Pat's Remember album has Pat too buried in the mix. I prefer the way his guitar stands out on El Hombre. Miles wanted the soloist to goose the drummer, which may not happen as much if you play behind the beat.

I'm tired of people talking shit about Scofield, man. When you hear him playing, you automatically know its sco, because he has this thing called STYLE, his ow style. I think you're right, people don't understand it.

In jazz, the theory goes as deep as the jazz musician wants it to really. I wouldn't go so far to say that any certain genre of music has less theory than another, because the music is based completely on the composer or player, although I would say that jazz requires enough theoretical knowledge to be able to convey ideas with improvisation, often over extremely complex and fast chord changes. A good player knows theory but plays from inside, in the end its all about expressing your ideas.
