The orchestra in this recording is fabulous. I think the best I've ever heard. This pianist seems to think he can put accents in the strangest places, which sort of bothers me.

The ending, with the Dies Irae, not the 18th Variation, is my favorite part. But the entire composition--a true masterpiece.

Impresionante. Si oírlo impresiona, verlo además impresiona mucho más. ¡Bravo!

You're not alone 'operabitch'...I grew up with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, et al but amid the records was a Julius Katchen version of this. I first heard it when a teenager, which unfortunately was a long time ago, and it still can reduce me to pulp. People talk about 'soul'. Mr R has it. |
