Ah! the irony of it all...this song was the favourite of my love when she had her heartbreak...and now...after she's gone from my life I realize that she indeed was the 'sabra girl'. The lyrics sound so true.

sounds like she says Homework Mustard in this song. I love the song, but that's just what I hear... what's the actual lyric?

Well considering that the original was written by Andy Irvine- a man who spent a lot of time travelling in Israel- I think it's quite likely that sabra girl actually refers to an Israeli.

To add to this, Sabra comes from the word Tzabur which is a prickly pear cactus. They usually have sharp thorns that cover and protect a soft and sweet fruit inside. Sometimes it's used as slang to talk about a person with a tough exterior that's unwilling to bend or give in to outside conditions or factors while concealing a tender side deep within. I suppose that can be used to describe a person as well and perhaps has a deeper meaning when related to this song.

thanks for explaining :) I always wondered why it was called this, I think her voice is beautiful as well

"Sabra" means a person born in israel. This song was originally by a man about a girl he met in israel. If you really listen to the lyrics you can tell it was supposed to be sung by a man, but her voice is so beautiful, I'm not complaining. |
