EVERY vegetarian species on the PLANET can absorb the B-12 produced by their own enteric bacteria. No carnivore (that we know of) absorbs their enteric B-12. They get their B-12 from the meat they eat.Humans cannot absorb the B-12 in their guts because it is produced by enteric bacteria in the colon, and all our B-12 absorption is done in the terminal ileum. We are "designed" to be omnivorous. Like it or not.

"we are much closer to herbivores like sheep, or pigs, than cats." Pigs are omnivores. Sheep are ruminants and our digestive system is a hell of a lot more like a cat's than a 4 stomached ruminant. So your premise is incorrect on both counts. You CAN get enough B-12 by eating unwashed foods. You also risk e.coli, hepatitis, etc. from contaminated foods. But you are running from the established fact that human digestion is consistent with omnivores, not vegetarians.

My point is not whether during the unspecified period 'early man' homo sapiens were hunters or not. But comparing human physiology with other mammals, we are much closer to herbivores like sheep, or pigs, than cats. That is an argument you didn't disprove, but discarded anyway.B-12 producing bacteria are abundant, and live on many plant species as well.If you get a significant amount of your food from subsistence agriculture and don't wash the greens too much, you'll get enough b-12 from that.

edvinfilm - Really? And you know this from what? The fossil record? The archeological record is clear. Early man were meat eaters. Chimpanzees, our closest relatives, are meat eaters.Your "argument" (calling it such to be kind) holds no water. The fact is that humans must eat meat, feces or synthetically enriched foods for B-12. And 100 years ago, synthetically enriched foods did not exist.Humans are omnivores. Thems the facts.
edvinfilm (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Humans used to be able to get b12 from intestinal bacteria, but lost that ability when it was no longer needed after the neolithic revolution when humans had a much more stable source of animal foods. The word 'natural' is unclear in this context.Other factors, such as our digestive system, proportionally much longer than mammal carnivores like felines, or 'natural' onivores like dogs or bears, would make sure that the case is still open for debate.
conotoxin (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Please name one (any) frugivore or vegetarian animal that must supplement b-12 in order to survive.Every natural vegetarian can absorb the b-12 produced by the bacteria in their guts. No exceptions.Humans do not, and cannot live without either eating meat, B-12 enriched foods, or poo. And we have that in common with every omnivore & carnivore.Case closed. Humans are natrual omnivores.

You are welcome to try any time you like! Two things you might want to consider: 1) I conceal carry. 2) I wrestled in college. So good luck with that!
nctrls2 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
How about, if I slaughter you and eat you up, would you like that. Eating plants is better then eating meat, animals are similar to humans.

belixcvet "It's not bad to eat meat" Nobody said cancer was "bad" I'm just providing info for innocent children."Meat is the reason you have pointy teeth"All hominidae evolved cuspids for defense, frugivorous chimps display larger cuspids than humans. "A vegetarian diet is better than both an omnivorous and vegan diet because a) you get the protein without b) all the unhealthy side effects" 1 problem is too much protein. Humans need little protein. Excess protein contributes to cancer, etc.
belixcvet (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
It's not bad to eat meat. Meat is the reason you have pointy teeth. Just because it's not bad though, doesn't mean that not eating meat is worse. A vegetarian diet is better than both an omnivorous and vegan diet because a) you get the protein without b) all the unhealthy side effects. Vegetarians are 4 times less likely to develop heart disease than people who eat meat.
