but the VN Group A was 20km/h quicker in a straight line than the VL, mark oastler said it in the brock/perkins top 10 shootout 1991 bathurst video, he should have gone for the VN Group A, i reckon.

Larry ran a VL in '92 because at that stage the aero kit on the Commodores wasn't effective at all, and was quite expensive. With His engineering ability, he beleived the VL to be quicker than the VP.

so you have actually driven one??? i know they can rev to 9000RPM, beause i've driven the Ashbey/Reed lansvale Smash Repairs VN SS Group A commodore, and the cutout line was 9200RPM. but the VK Group A's had a cutout of 6500RPM. even look at the Brock/Perkins 1991 bathurst shootout lap, and listen to brock's mobil cars.

NO HOLDEN V8 REVS TO 9000 RPM, THATS bullshit. They can only rev to 5800. Trust me i know.
Skynet2029AD (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Thats one reason why the 7500 rpm was introduced, to keep the engines from breaking and get more reliability plus keep costs down.
Skynet2029AD (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
It was probably because he already owned one. The VL which Larry finnished 3rd in the 1990 race was the same one used in 1992 and 93, so it was a matter of costs , and the VL wasn't a bad car anyway.
jam3z07 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
he would have had more straight line speed if he kept the VN Group A with the Group A bodykit rather than using the VL Group A or the VN with the aero bodykit, because the VN was a further development of the VL, so he probably would have found more development with the VN than the VL. but i don't understand why he was still using the VL in late '93'.
CASTROLmotorsport (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
9000RPM???????? thats fuckin high for a holden V8, i thought it would start falling apart at just 5800RPM.
Skynet2029AD (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Larry believed the Group A spec VL would be more competative that the new 5litre class which replaced Group A. The Group A spec VL didn't have a 7500rpm rev limit, it ran close to 9000 rpm and without the aero kit Larry figured it would give him more straight line speed, it was also well sorted and reliable. He qualified that car in second place at Bathurst 92. |
