Just to be annoying I would imagine. A doctor patient privilege. A teacher student separation of state.

Anybody out there notice that there mouth is hanging open slightly, and their head is moving left to right when they watch this?My curse is that I never played with a pick, and now at 60, will probably never be able to "pick" it up.

So why should I call for example a C mixolydian C D E F G A Bb,a C major pentatonic C D E G A- with 3d raised to obtain a F and a lowered 7th to obtain a Bb?

If you take a better look to this vid, you'll understand that it's better know,in precisely way, what scales are used to create this lines, and not know simply "the alteration of some notes"..

You doesn't understand the Martino's discussion:he just play a minimal part of most used scales..it doesn't mean anything talking about pentatonic harmonization.Calling it "miscellaneous pentatonic-dorian-melodic-harmonic" or calling how like you "jazzy lick with alteration of some notes" doesn't change.Change the "form" of the sentence..not the "sense".

a IONIAN mode C scale: C D E F G A B obviously contains also the C D E G A major pentatonic scaleand if playing a jazz lick a typical combination of pentatonic blues lick comes out does not mean that we are playing pentatonic. It is the distance between the notes that makes a scale, the alteration of some notes & not just a desire to reduce it to you SRV pentatonic world

"Play pentatonics" doesn't mean play only root-3b-5th and 7b..it means also playin' pentatonics ideas(5th and 5b..called "Blues ideas" !)combinated to melodic/harmonics minor,mixo-dorian and bebop chromatisms....At a first watch,it's not so easy to understand a thing like this, but listen better.... ;-)

btw I adore all Pat Martino's cd's, he is amazing, even after his illness.thanx for posting

I don't think he's using pentatonic scales, what can you do with 5 notes while you're playing jazz?Surely a melodic minor or a aeolian or dorian... but pentatonic, come on be serious. |
