I agree with gidplaystheviolin, and in addition - better slower tempo than 'devilish' tempo and missed music. Bravi!

i just played this at a music camp over hte summer, we learned it in a week. it's wicked fun to play, and you play it very well, but it's so slow! and it slowed down as you got on. this mvt. is supposed to dazzle and be exciting, although al the notes and dynamics are there...it's wayyy too slow.

I don't think they should have changed the dynamics of the repeated-note theme (at 0'30'') - in the score it is marked fortissimo all the way through, but the way it is performed sounds like they lose energy suddenly for no reason and have to work up to ff again. Should be a confident, climactic statement but the players don't know if they are coming or going here... I think Mendelssohn knew better.Tempo is fine, it is necessary for the cellos to be able to articulate their subject.

I agree with you, I just played this piece at a strings course made of teenage musicians, and even we played it a little faster then this tempo. However I would say that actually the cellos shouldn't bounce on the solo parts. I was told not to bounce off the string in the beginning because the tune moves towards the solo from the first violin and it needs to get more exciting towards that point.Anyway, this is a great piece and a great recording.

You need to understand that this last movement is meant to dazzle and amaze...the tempo is way too slow and the cellos (since they start out the fughetta solo)need to be almost virtuosic;they should be bouncing the bow off the string (staccato)as should everyone else up until the 1st violin comes in;to check out how it should be done listen to the emerson quartet play this movement on this site.

First time I've "seen" it played. The nuances and dynamics are marvelous!
gidplaystheviolin (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
slow or fast it dosnt matter, because we all play it the way we enjoy it and that is what music is about.this is a beautiful performance, im lucky enough to be learning this at the moment and its phenominal to think that he was only 16 when he wrote it!
leoscello (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
its definitely too sow - i played it- its a difficult piece but you have to do it faster to get a good interpretation in my opinion
