i remember being pulled up by my headmaster and told to get my haircut and report back the next day to him , (my hair was very long and curly )went home that night , watched this and rogers hair was way longer than he usually had it around this time ,watched pete and moony giving it some . YOU KNOW THE REST .

What's really ironic is that TOTP used to use the clip of Pete kicking the drums over in the opening credits after this! But they banned The Who for life because of this incident! Thanks for posting - first time i've seen the full clip!

The story is that Pete threw a fit because they had to mime, which is strange seeing how many times The Who mimed on TV shows in the 60's and Roger's solo stuff did well enough for him to be on TOTP enough around this time and to know of the miming policy! The night this was originally transmitted (btw live vocal, everything else re-recorded for the programme, usually that afternoon!) the BBC cut the song WAY before the smashing up started!!

It had something to do with a BBC executive and the Tommy film going into production, like the exec was gonna snub them or something because he was 'passed over' by R Stigwood who produced the film. Then the announcer's attitude was a some kind of insult, in terms of british show biz ethics. Told this by someone who was there at the time...

This is sweet!

my mistake - i just remembered the reason they smashed the shit up was because they were forced to mime. so its just an alt track they recorded. you can hear the guitar track is different from the recorded one even after pete smashes it
jg7368 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
im pretty sure thats real - if not theres alwas the possibility the vocals are live and they recorded an alt. backing track like they did on the smothers brothers
nicknagurka (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
i'm just sayin that it could've been cut. you realize that they also used backing tracks for the pianos and synths during live concerts? you're probably right, i'm just playin' devil's advocate...

In fact, at the end of the song, Pete stops playing guitar but the music continues to play. The voices are miming too. |
