Great article! I can't believe Nike would think they could get away with doing this.

ahhh, but your logic is not sound. as the reporter explained, these people were promised good work and living quarters by the recruiters. as soon as they got to the factory they were forced to sign a contract and give up their passport. They didn't KNOW they would be forced to work for almost nothing and horrible housing and have their passport taken. They were deceived and thus it was not their choice. They thought this was the better opportunity.

How is Nike our government? The $800 fee the people pay up front is a room and board fee. The fact of the matter is: people would not work there if they had a better opportunity. We cannot hold their labor conditions to the same standard as ours because it is a different world.

this is nothing to feel so shocked about this news. many people from poorer country are being treated like this by our government.this video is just one of the example of how our goverment treat them. Everyone in should be treated equally although they are from different countries or different races. this should not happen because malaysia is one of the country which consists of variety races.

This is nothing new! It's a story repeated all over Asia. Third world labourers working for a pittance - NET salary levels that are meagre even in their own home countries. Govt's and contractors in these countries have absolutely no sense of social justice. Just a mentality of pure greed and rampant exploitation. They should outlaw charging workers fees for job placements. New staff pay employers a fee equal to 1 years pay - which is returned to workers as monthly salaries!

While it's no excuse that Nike did not monitor the operation of its contractors, it is the Malaysian company Hytex which should be penalized. This should be a wake-up cal to irresponsible Malaysian organizations that treat people from poorer country like animals. It's such a shame that our HR minister S. Subramaniam try to cover this up. It won't go down well in the next election.
