The tathagata(buddha) never was a jain ascetic! he and mahavira were contemporaries, but they ever even met each other! buddha used to make extreme acsetism, but his practicer were never conected to mahavira or jainism. Namaskar!

Yes but the main difference is that Buddha from bouddhism is always dress with a piece of coton while mahavir from jainism is always naked ! :) and remember that Buddha was a jain ascetic before creating the "middle way" (the way between jainism and hindouism ... have a nice day !
