"Hey, this must be your 7th lifetime too!" :-) Well you make a good point that to play exactly the way they do, with the music they do and the exact sound, then you need the exact classical technique, but finger picking really sound amazing and due to peer pressure and tradition, no one does it. I made many records that way and no one missed a beat!Musicians can be afraid of doing things differently, however many musicians made their mark by doing it different like with tapping....

Well, the myth is that one must play sitar for 7 lifetimes in order to get it down.So after I set mine up to play ten times easier, my drummer joked, "Wow, you must have practiced 6 lives before this!"So I put the sitar on the floor so it was standing upright in the air and when I came back from the kitchen, my drummer was tapping the strings with his drum stick and fretting from that position and it soun ded like a cross between sitar and zyther, so I said,

There is a whole wealth of improvisation in Western music. You just have to listen to the right music. Just like in Indian, you can't take Bollywood pop music and use that as a means to judge all Indian music. Western music has just as much to offer, you only have to look past the surface and delve into different genres of music to find such things.

There is a reason why the action is that high and there is also a mizrab and the "picking" style has a great advantage over trying to use a flat pick. You'll never be able to play sitar like pros without learning the proper technique. Hundreds and hundreds of years of musicians playing has developed the technique for Sitar and ignoring that knowledge of technique is only going to hurt you if you care to truly learn to play the instrument.

Awesome! Those sitars are really awkward and difficult to play like that. I took one and adjusted it to make the strings really low to the frets, not the high action traditional way, then instead of using that freaky finger pick for everything, I used pinger and flat picking, and voila, I sounded really pro right away! Hats off to her!
