your hand acts like a paddle actually. but as you hit your hand with the water, you slice the water with your hand.

even this is too complicated for me . . . I think I'd better get a teacher . . . Can someone just explain what the hand is doing - is it cupping or going in some "slice" thing?

Improve the technique!!! Try swimming with fins to find the 6-beat rythm. Swimming all out with fins also takes away all the pauses in your stroke and makes you create momentum by always moving your arms. Paddles tells you how to catch but be careful with using them!Don´t pause legkick in freestyle while breating! Breathe with a small motion!Look at your strokes recorded by videocamera and compare to the big athletes or post on youtube so we can "fix" them :)That´s my tipses

try to stretch more....you gotta be smooth and flexiblw in the water......anyhow...let's be serious it's all about whether you got it or not....if you can't ..don't try pushing it...there are other kinds of sports that you can succeed in...

time is more important but when you are talking about anything over 500m strokes count to because the less strokes that you take per lap results in less energy applied per lap.
