I agree that this car is better suited for city driving, but in the US cities sprawl over long distances and people commute everyday over the highways at 70+mph. I dont think the smart car would fair any better against an SUV, truck or even towncar that is typical on US roads. Hitting a wall is a real possibility especially in icy condition though of course you would not be going 70mph.

wow. it did better than I expected but it's still a piece of junk. imagine getting hit by an oncoming semi on the highway. 65 miles per hour plus 65 miles per hour equals 139. That's dead stop at 130 miles an hour!!! still wanna buy one?

But people often confuse this with suv's witch have a higher chance of rolling and trucks whoms saftey requirements are much lower than in a regular car.If you look at the iihs posted information.Larger CARS (not trucks or SUV's)have lower death rates per capita. As the car decreases in weight the death rates rise.So yes biger is safer. But you are right in one point SUV's have a higher chance of killing there ocupants than a conventional large car and (upper-weighted) midsized car.

This test is useless. Who would drive Smart 70mph? He must be psycho. This car is for city driving where the average speed is about 30mph or mostly 6mph when you are standing in traffic jam.

im gunna buy won next year... do they sell it in the US???

Not even. People mistakenly believe that bigger means safer, but if you check out the stats (deaths per 1,000,000 drivers), you'll see that some of the worst records belong to larger cars.

the vid is not in proper proportions

Just as a reminder: In the beginning the Smart was designed for Europe only and also only as a city car. For this purpose alone it performs very well, I don't think anyone would be doing 70mph in the city. Anybody dringing against a concrete block with that speed has a slim chance of surviving, no matter what car. Also note that the Smart in this vid is the older model that was not sent to the US, the newer one has a longer nose, meaning more protection in crashes, so please be realistic.

I think I am a pretty good judge on this subject having just completed my 24 year as a Deputy Coroner in California. No vehicle, large or small will hold up in a crash with a semi-truck. The chances of the people surviving the accident are slim to none in either case. And if the occupants are able to survive, they would be facing months if not years to heal from the horrific injuries they have sufferred. From a structural stand point, the Smart is better suited for safety than other vehicles.
For those considering buying a new vehicle, don't forget to check out the new 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Great for adventures off road, just for cruising around town, or running to the store.

The new 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser seats five and comes in two-tone with a Voodoo Blue, Titanium Metallic, Black Diamond, Sun Fusion, Sandstorm or Brick body color and White top. The interior fabric color is Dark Charcoal, while the dash, center instrument panel trim and the door inserts match the body.
