You sound like you know what yer talking about, when he does that portamento sound is he doing a oscillator sync or something? It sounds so cool, kinda that buzzy sound from Let's Go by The Cars.

The ARP Odyssey generates sound with two voltage controlled oscillators. They pass through a variable series of voltage controlled filters, attenuators, envelopes. The repetitive arpeggiator effect is using the low frequency oscillator.

The sound at :56 uses the 'Portamento' to slide the note. In this case from the upper key, down the scale, to the lower note he plays. I can see he has the portamento slider set to maximum so it is the longest duration setting.

I tend to approach this from a non traditional standpoint, without the rules of making a melody... I just love the journey to get the sound you want....
