I think it's a symbol, because it actually apparently leads the black things back into the pod. When they're all marching, it views the butterflys face.I'm guessing it means that even the most innocent seeming thing can be consumed and transformed into evil.I dunno. I'm just guessing!=]

i think its about imperialism. the planes fly over the foreign country where people are living their lives happily and drop what appears to be some kind of trojan horse. the natives see it as a gift and start feeding off of it. before they know it, it blasts open and begins destroying their world and transforming them into versions of themselves.
