Herzog knew Dieter Dangler quite well. See 'Little Dieter Needs to Fly", a documentary filmed way before Rescue Dawn. It's clear that Gene and Dieter had some issues. I am a huge fan of Herzog, but he did make a big mistake on Rescue Dawn. His portrayal of Gene DeBruin is for Hollywood purposes only - somehow having someone "strange" and unstable like the character of DeBrun spices up the whole thing. Unfortunately, the approach has little to do with the truth. It is a shame.

His life story is an inspiration and not only to soldiers who faced similar situations but to all of us. It is epitomy of the human will to live and survive, much like the Holocaust survivors.

just read the truth behind rescue dawn and the film is not the truth, good film but as its surpossed to be a ture story a shame on the film makers RIP DIETER DENGLER and only i think that EUGENE DEBRUIN was not the man the film makers made him to look like he also was a HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
