Ravan at that time was with his wife and the mountain was blocking their way. Since he was lost in love for his wife, he actually forgot that the mountain was nothing but Kailash mountain, the horde of Shiva, instead he tried to uproot the mountain. Shiva got angry and punished him. Ravan realised his folly and chanted the tandav stotram to praise Shiva. Shiva was impressed by the powerful words of the stotram and awarded him with a boon which is later useful during the battle of Lanka

ravan may not've seen SHVA's tandav at that moment but he must've seen it b4,he knew everything bout SHIVA,how can he lift the mountain without getting powers from SHIVA??it means he must have seen him and known him right??if he knows him then how can he miss out the fact that SHIVA does tandav? got your answer mate?

Actually Ravana did. As I said in my previous mail, the stotra is about the power of lord Shiva.

not at all. there would be nothing which would be stopping him from doing so.say ur explaining this mythology story about ravan to a child and u tell him how great his bhakti was that even when he was under a mountain he only praised lord shiva. the first question he would ask is then y didnt he construct a stotra that tells about the power of lord shiva.you never know what premise you had asked the question with until ur the asker of the question itself.Jai bholenath.

Lets say Ravan doesn't. How does that stop him constructing a poem which praises lord Shiva? You need to read the meaning of the Stotra and see that there is nothing in the stotra which describes exact steps of the Tandav stotra. Anyway the premise of your question is not correct and points to an incorrect attitude.

hi, i had a small question or rather a doubt about this stotra. it is said that this stotram was recited by ravan when he was pushed under a mountain when shivji pressed Mt kailash with his toe.Ravan didnt see Lord Shiva dancing the tandava and so how does he really know how shivji does the tandav. i think the mythology story isnt that convincing. anyone agrees to me?

ctd.mantras can be vedic or tantric. tantric mantras are very powerful and hence should be done under the guidence of an experienced tantric only.vedic mantras can be chanted by one and all (om namah shivay is a vedic mantra).basically from ur birth chart ur ista devata should be deduced (this will be the god who will be most helpful in u achieving enlightmnet).you can then take up a mantra (again need a close look at ur birth chart) which will help u achieve a specific thing u want to.

hi. you seem to have very nice interest in mantra shastra.you are right. any human being can recite any mantra and you are also right in asking about the power of mantras.basically we need to understand that mantras are sound energy that help u connect to ur god.there is a concept of ista devata (favourite god)and also of god for village, family etc etc.all are there for u to connect to ur diety so that they can help u achieve enlightment.
