jazz is about what's in your head and different harmonic ideas, patterns etc. is a way of extended the ideas in your head, developing your imagination.

fortunately passion and soul are subjective, pointless metaphors bandied around far to much. Gypsy guys run straight scales sometimes. Kurt in this video is using obvious musical materials which he uses for reference while exploring other melodic ideas. I agree with the guy remarking his incredible intention. He can craft explicit harmonic shapes with total freedom, some thing many players over look in the face of abstraction.

I really don't understand why people don't get the thing about Kurt. He's incredible, it's not chops, we're talking here about the intention behind each note. Kurt doesn't have to play fast but everyone knows he can, he doesn't have to play crazy harmonic concept even though he does, everything is about the intention behind each little note he plays. That makes a good player in my opinion.

I am sorry dude, but you are wrong. There aren't many who play with such passion. Yes, there are scales and arpeggio's and patterns, but the day you come up with phrasing as brilliant as this, I will praise you.

scales, arpeggios and patterns...not music.if you like chops listen to the gypsy guys, stocelo, joscho, birelli...at least they have passion and soul in their music.IMHO
