For what little it is worth, Iam of mixed Scottish Irish and English ancestry, probably like alot of English people. Needless to say the attempts of the Scots to blame the English or the Irish to blame the Scots or the English leave me cold .Both sets of grandparents were out and out working class people, on my mothers side as poor as church mice. Please do not think everyone profited from the Empire, if they,"the bosses" could exploit them abroad they would do at home too.

Well it may surprise you to know I can understand that.Although perhaps you should try reading posts by google14, an American who belittles just about everyone else, plus his spelling is atrocious!

I don't mean to tweek John Bull's nose, but when you're a former colony, or group of colonies, you see history a little differently as far as Empires go, but that's a totally different can of worms all together, isn't it?

No one disputes that. If you read my posts, I never belittled England's ednurance or her people's suffering. As far as the British Empire goes, I'm not a fan. I'm not a fan of American intervention in other aspects of world affairs either, though, so it's not just ya'll. I understand England's suffering and her heroism during those dark days. But all I've een seeing recently is people (primarily English people belittling Americans on here. You get a little tired of it.

Sorry to bang on, but if Britain had not hung on in 40/41, and yes it was hanging on where would the Americans have invaded from? Across the Atlantic, the English Channel proved difficult enough.

Fair enough to the general gist of your argument.Stalin always argued that the Britsh brought time the Americans money but Russia paid in blood. [I despise Communism incidentally]Whatever you think of the British Empire I doubt if we could have held on in WW2 without it. Effectively it was sacrificed to defeat a far greater evil, Nazi Germany. All credit to the post war government of Atlee for granting independence to former colonies like India[unlike France who tried to hang on to Indochina]

tbh if the bismarck hadnt been sunk by the british we were fucked so tbh we also won the war

have said that he was waging war on America because one of his allies had been attacked, not because they were the attacker. However, Americans have a remarkable quality about being really pissed off when our blood is up, and eventually either Japan or Germany would have made us this angry. America was coming one way or the other, and it wouldn't have fought one without fighting the other.

Empire and less about the good of the world. I say, and still hold to my original thesis that it was American money and weaponry and Russian blood that saved the World from Hitler. American involvement was more guaranteed than you might think. Roosevelt, despite the fact that he wasn't open about it. Was slowly and surely preparing the Americans for war with either Japan or Germany. Even if Japan hadn't attacked, a confrontation with them would have been inevitable, and then Hitler could justly |
