You're right you can play with the time and warp it around but it's usually only good to do that when playing with a rhythm section thats playing in time. Since he's playing by himself I thought it was a small issue. Other than that I thought it was a good video.

It's silly to be that fussy. This isn't a dog show or a contest. Music is organic and flows as we feel it. Music comes from the soul and the application of restriction is a tool not the driver. You can play a little forward , a little behind, on the beat.. I don't think he is trying to win a ribbon.

the banjo is from Africa and came over with slaves. It was altered to it's present form by Joel Sweeny in 1831. He added the shorter 5th string.
