It is a Wittmayer harpsichord, a 20th century instrument.

the "humming" is slightly offputting

really, this music sounds much better on harpsichord than on pianoforte.

Actually, I'm SURE it's not a harpsichord, in the last few seconds of this clip you see him using the pedals with his feet. Harpsichords DON'T HAVE PEDALS! Nor do they need them. This is either his custom instrument or a "Clavicembalo", which is probably a sort of 18th century chamber music instrument.

This isn't a true harpsichord, it might be that hybrid instrument everyone is talking about. It has more "volume control" than a harpsichord, and the upper manual sound like it's striking the strings, not plucking them.Gould was a PIANIST, he wished for a harpsichord that plays like a piano (i.e. it can take more pounding)To hear a real harpsichord, search for the video "when the Harpsichord was King", the sound is much richer and more seductive than this "hybrid" harpsichord.

Looks like somebody is sucking his dick under the harpsichord. LOL |
