Wikipaedia does a fair job of the true story.

A good film but an insult to Britain. The book was written by Pierre Boule and was a stitch-up of the British by a Frenchman who could never forgive a favour. he had to denigrate Britains role in WW2 because of France's shame. To have the folly of a British Officer rescued by an American was a travesty. In Reality, there were no Americans in the camp and after American planes tried to blow up the bridge (and missed)5 times, it was finally bombed(and hit) by the RAF.

it is a good movie but it dose not tell what really happened there. The Japanese were far more brutal and many of the Prisoners were killed not only by there guards but by disease it was a hell hole. There were also Asian Laborers.
