Its strings are thicker... and the first 8 are like bass strings. They only get really thin at around the 9th.

I have to agree with Tyranipole. Even though I only play a 4-string bass, he's right, you can't limit yourself on what you can do. Even on a 4-string bass, you have to recognize there are hundreds of different ways to play one. It all depends on your style. Some like funk, rock, blues, etc. You could also argue that for metal a bass only needs one or two strings. Bass guitar is as diverse as any instrument, so don't be short-sighted

why do they call it a bass it has the same strings as on a guitar (and bass)
Tyranipole (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Scratch that, a little over three octaves. More strings = more possibilities.

If you want to limit yourself to a little over 4 octaves, be my guest. He has more notes, and he knows how to use them. Think of it this way: an extended range piano in bass format.

Damn dude if you were to play 1 single note on that top string on a regular amp the amp would explode!

4 string all u need, enough said! If 11 strings or even 6 string basses turn u on then u wud b as well taking up the guitar. Thats not what basses r all about.
