Written in the key of E major and in the typical lyrical Italian Baroque style, it is scored for solo soprano, two violins, viola and basso continuo, this would normally be a cello and keyboard instrument, in Vivaldi's case often the organ. The piece praises Jesus Christ for the salvation he offers (in Christianity) to an imperfect world full of evil and sin; as one of Vivaldi's sacred works, the lyrics are accordingly written in the traditional Latin.

And as someone who's not Italian, but who has studied Latin, we have to remember, we aren't sure about the pronunciation anyway. Scholars can only do their best to give us the best estimate possible. I'm very glad of it though. I never think there is something wrong with the way Emma Kirkby sings.

Emma Kirkby has the voice of an angel. Do yourself a favor and pick up the double disc CD of this recording, which contains the entire piece as well as Vivaldi's Gloria. Thanks for posting.

Actually she is singing in latin and for me sounds very good, she's got very good diction. I love her!!! Brava maestra!!!
