And no extra pay for that extra skill? I have my own small, unique skill set that I refuse to use on my employer's behalf because he's quite unwilling to part with a bit of his profits to pay for it. I spent my irretrievable time, sweated, studied, and sometimes bled for them. Nothing is free, especially the skills of another. Unless you're into that slavery thing...

Personally I'm glad we live in a free country where a person can run their business how they choose - within reasonable limits. I don't think that the uni-lingual need to be made a protected class. Your last sentence is totally incoherent for it is not the illegal immigrant who "expects" that Spanish be spoken it is the decision of the business owner. Besides your example is silly because there are a ton of jobs in Mexico (not just in tourism) that DO require that applicants speak English!

Actually the nationality of those who run the business has little to do with it. I know of businesses run by white U.S. born citizens that require that Spanish be spoken for some positions. It has more to do with the fact that a large portion of their customer base speaks Spanish as a first language and English as a second and are thus more comfortable in their native language... so the businesses have to adapt to stay competitive. It's called "capitalism" - look into it.

I think we should stop being so close minded and learn other languages other than English

I think Americans SHOULD be bilingual, but why does it always have to be English and Spanish? I love the German language, and hope to speak it fluently one day.
DougRodrigues (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
The insulting thing about the language situtaion is that in the United States, many of the now Mexican run businesses require that Spanish be spoken to get hired! Now why should any American be required to speak Spanish in our own country? Why not require the Mexican speak English? We're in the United States...NOT Mexico! If I worked illegally in Mexico, would I expect that the Mexicans speak English?

That would be a good debate.

"But I hope Ch. 62 never comes after you "Well, I hope they do.

Almost all Spanish stations are extremely biased on illegal immigration and politics. A bunch of fascist Cubans own Univision so I would expect they would be a little fair when it comes to illegal immigration and crime. But I hope Ch. 62 never comes after you
For those considering buying a new vehicle, don't forget to check out the new 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Great for adventures off road, just for cruising around town, or running to the store.

The new 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser seats five and comes in two-tone with a Voodoo Blue, Titanium Metallic, Black Diamond, Sun Fusion, Sandstorm or Brick body color and White top. The interior fabric color is Dark Charcoal, while the dash, center instrument panel trim and the door inserts match the body.
