Oh I agree with you, I was just speaking generally, the freedom the 80s had to offer was obstructed by the Reagan and AIDS epidemics. But yes, Donna should have continued with her dance/new disco oriented stuff, but A LOT was going on and I think she even became a born-again christian at tht point as well...

can't blame aids/regan for disco dying instead of going underground. artists like donna abandoned long, drawn-out synthetic sounds like this and shouldn't have, while a few new wavers picked it up. this kind of sound dying had to do with media companies and radio station programmers. aids didn't stop madonna or the more simple sound of people like madonna who were were inspired by donna.donna made a mistake by ditching this sound during the anti-disco hysteria of the very early 1980s.

she should have continued with this type of music after 1979 and ignored the mostly unwarranted disco backlash and accepted that she would have sold less with this type of music which is what happened anyway. i know hindsight is 20/20 but she would have got more recognition at this point if her 1980s music was more dance and less urban or whatever it was.

Sneaking to Ginos in West Hollywood, then going to Tommy Burgers on Beverly and Rampart...and eating Lord knows what! Blasting Donna on the cassette player...man oh man, fun times at 17 years of age!! Now I hear you have to go there a your own risk because of the gang wars :( Can't we all just get along????
pomomatthew (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
agreed. i wish she had spent just a little bit more time singing more heavily arpeggiated synth-based dance songs though, she jumped too quickly to more mainstream arrangements...
