Here is Rosalind Russell doing her own singing. I took the released film version (dubbed by Lisa Kirk) and synched it up to Roz' tracks (which were released on CD in 2003). Since this vocal track synched up so easily, it would appear to me that she sang to it during filming, as Natalie Wood did in "West Side Story" before Marni Nixon replaced her voice. Roz includes exactly three paragraphs on "Gypsy" in her autobiography, "Life Is A Banquet."_____________________ _____________At first I was only to act the part; Rose's singing was dubbed by a professional with a big trained voice. When I heard it, I got sick. "It isn't me," I said. "I'm bad, but I can't stand to hear that. Everybody knows I don't sing operatically, it throws the balance off." Warner Brothers agreed and rescored the picture, and I sang my own part. People still say that I didn't, but that's Roz, and nobody else, as Rose on the soundtrack of Gypsy.________________________ __________Roz, we love you, but if that's you in the film, then who's that singing in these clips? Ethel?Rumor has it that Merman, rightfully angry that she was not cast in the film, got hold of these recordings and used to play them for friends at parties. Now why would she do that? =)(Note that in this version she sings the original lyric, "Hey, L.A., I'm comin' your way" - apparently the story had not been rewritten at the time of recording.)From TCM:Though she had starred in the stage musical "Wonderful Town" ten years earlier, Russell's voice didn't have the power required for the score. After listening to her recording of the numbers, even Russell had to agree that she would need to be dubbed, though she would deny this, too, in her memoirs. Russell's voice was used only for the patter portions of the numbers. For the real singing, Broadway belter Lisa Kirk, who had starred in the original stage production of "Kiss Me, Kate," modulated her voice to a near perfect match for Russell's...

Thank you so much for putting this song and clip and Rox Russell on the Internet, so that we can all see it. I watch it all the time. How you do it? I don't know. But, THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES! I love Ros Russell; oh. Thank you very much; even "profoundly", as Sen Mc Cain says. I'm voting for Marcus Aurelius, since he coined Gold Coins. And: VP: Greta. Thanks so much for ROZ!!! YOU ARE WONDERFUL!!!

i love rosalind russell and adore this film but yeesh.... these sounds pretty bad...they did a fantastic job dubbing her, the voice and all there technicalites like vocal mannerisms are spot on.

You're wrong about "You'll Never Get Away Fomr Me" - listen to my clip of Roz' voice and then listen to the youtube clip of the released film. They are completely different, since Roz was completely dubbed by Lisa Kirk in that number.Roz did sing in "Together" but that song was cut before the film was released.

Not true. In the original release, she also sang You'll Never Get Away From Me and Together Whereever We Go

No wonder the Merm used to play Roz's voice and parties for a laugh. This is just ridiculous. She has no pitch AT ALL. This is like one of those American Idol auditions during the first week; it's so had you can't help but watch. I'd compare it to a train wreck, but even a train wreck has to to know where it is going at some point...

"ROSE" 1:48

I love her pitch perfect "GOODBYE" at 2:36. It get's me every time I watch it.

Didn't my note make that clear? I mentioned Lisa's name twice. There was no mixing of voices. Roz sings "Mr. Goldstone" and the first half of "Rose's Turn" - everything else is entirely Lisa Kirk. Listen to my clips, and then to the released film, and you'll hear that.

In actuality it was Lisa Kirk who voiced Roz in GYPSY. They did a real mixture of the two voices together throughout most of the film.
