This video is horribly warped. I'll just list the issues.[BEGIN RANT]1. The visual portrayal of dairy cows is all wrong. Dairies can only survive if they are A-grade. Grades are determined by the dairies' cleanliness, which is determined regularly by federal inspectors and a list of very high standards. Any dairy that looked like the ones in this video would be immediately shut down.[RANT tbc]

[RANT ctd.]2. BGH (bovine growth hormone) is a natural hormone that functions to increase the production of milk in dairy cattle. The cattle's lactation period is not extended or warped. What is does is slow the decrease of production after the peak lactation, resulting in more milk per cow per year. The hormone is passed on to the milk, yes, but it is destroyed by pasteurization, saliva, and stomach acid. Neither the cattle nor the consumers are harmed.[RANT tbc]

[RANT ctd.]3. Calves must be separated from their mothers immediately after birth to prevent maternal bonding. If their calves were allowed to bond, then the ultimate separation would stress the cow and her calf, negatively affecting the cow's production and the calf's growth.[RANT tbc]

[RANT ctd]4. I don't know the mechanics involved with feeding calves, but I know the risk of mad cow is very low. The US has one of the best programs to prevent mad cow disease, and it should be noted that only three—let me say that again: only THREE—beef cows have even been diagnosed with the disease. The subsequent herd slaughters, beef recalls, and oaths by Oprah to never eat beef again were positive reactions to prevent any potential damage. And you know what? It worked.[END RANT]

No, male calves enter the beef side of the cattle industry. Most are sent to feedlots, where dairy steers and cull cows form 20% of the beef you consume. The rest of the male calves are fed milk diets for a year and become veal.Get the facts, people.

That's in the swine industry, actually. It's to prevent cannibalism.

At the end Leo said that by helping out small dairy factories you'd be stopping the Meatrix, but the Meatrix is the thought of those small dairy factories, so you're actually helping out the Meatrix by doing what they tell you to do, and what they tell you to do is not help out the Meatrix.PARADOX! |
