Oh yes, there are so many differences, we watched the film "Turtles can fly" some days ago and my husband said it was difficult for him to understand. Possible, but difficult. Thanks for the explanation, too. My husband ist from the east of turkey, so from him I learned only apo and xalo ;)

Mam is what you call your uncle from dads sideyou could also say mamoXal is from moms side and you could also say xalo :)diffrent kurds from diffrent areas speak diffrentlykurds living in turkeys east (north kurdistan) would say Apo were kurds in north iran (south east kurdistan) wouldnt sya that at all

According to some descriptions of this film it really is his name. I didn't know mamo was a word for ones uncle (I only knew apo and xalo), so I asked my husband (he's a kurd, too) and he told me you were right, but that it's a man's name, too ;)But one last question I ask you because he never used this word (mamo), is it really for an uncle on dads side? Because I found it as a name for your mothers brother in a book, so I don't know...?
