DocTone is also a play on the words 'Dark Tones'. Listen to enough Kenny Kirkland and you'll see why.

I have a live recording where Wynton says, "We call him The Doctor because he can play all the instruments up here."That's from 1984 - I'm not sure when it became Doctone.

Doctone was Kenny Kirkland's nickname. I imagine it stands for "Doctor Tone". I'm not sure the entire history on when and how he got the nickname. |
