Billie Holiday wrote the lyrics for this tune so it must have been written with her in mind. Abbey Lincoln recorded this with Mal on her Candid recording 'Straight Ahead'. Coleman Hawkins blows beautifully that recording too. The OP posted that too so check it out and give him/her a thank you!

I think Her recordings with Mal are among Her best, if not best of all

This is simply beautiful, melancholy majesty. I wonder if he wrote this with Billie Holiday in mind. He was her piano player up until her transition.

I cover this song on my page. It's nowhere near this good as those jazz icons who sing it. Beautiful song.

Thanks for posting this. This is a gorgeous ballad by Mal. Could someone upload Abbey Lincoln's recording of this song from her candid recording, 'Straight Ahead' with Max Roach, Julian Priester, Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, Mal Waldron, Richard Davis?I know someone out there has to have a copy.
