Thanks for posting this video. I've been a huge fan of Ry and his virtuoso playing since about the time this originally aired on The Old Grey Whistle Test. Got turned on to him in college and was fortunate to see him live several times. He continues to put out great albums and is quite the musicologist with a gift for introducing the public to outstanding lesser known and forgotten musicians from around the world. Check out his albums "Into the Purple Valley" and "Paradise and Lunch".

OK your probably the man to ask here goes. My Ry Cooder album content is Chavez Ravine,Buena Vista Social Club and his best off double cd. By the way a fine example of his work, but don't you think this is a pale immitation of the delta blues. I grew up with the Whistle Test.....excellent.

Oh yeah, and Chris Thile too -- another mandolin master.

Oops - my bad. You were asking about the thingie. It's a mandolin, man. Check out Sam Bush or David Grisman for some mindblowing playing.

Wish I could remember. It was awhile ago. It was a National Geographic or PBS special. I don't even think it was a music documentary. If I ever locate it, I'll try to post it.

erm... what's it called?

The 12-bar blues is an organic expression of the tonal system. It celebrates the overtone series. It's in everything that vibrates. I saw a t.v. documentary once about an out-of-the-way African tribe somewhere, folks living as they had for thousands of years, and one of the locals took out a monostring instrument and started to sing and play...the BLUES. The hair stood up on the back of my neck. I do believe the blues is as old as sound itself.
For those considering buying a new vehicle, don't forget to check out the new 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Great for adventures off road, just for cruising around town, or running to the store.

The new 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser seats five and comes in two-tone with a Voodoo Blue, Titanium Metallic, Black Diamond, Sun Fusion, Sandstorm or Brick body color and White top. The interior fabric color is Dark Charcoal, while the dash, center instrument panel trim and the door inserts match the body.
