I jut got the macbook pro with iLife 08 you cant put effects on videos in the 08 version only music, titles, text, music and sound effects... idk why

Take a frame out of the movie, edit in a muzzle flash (you can probably find them off Google Images), and splice that frame back in.

You'd figure that with the completely redesigned interface and improved functionality, Apple wouldn't COMPLETELY GET RID OF the whole component that makes iMovie a video editor! Technically, you can achieve the same kinds of things imovie '08 offers using PowerPoint! They'd better fix that in a software update, because I really sacrifice a lot using imovie HD. Dammit!
