Kern and Gershwin--what a team. This is a song that will always be great and a reminder of what such popular music meant to The Greatest Generation.

laybl1 spoke for me stating "her voice spoke directly to the men fighting overseas in WWII...miles and years from their loved ones."Laybl, I don't know you but I damn certainly appreciate you!

I grew up hearing the music of my mother's youth as she was music obsessed. I always envied her and the time she lived. Yes, it was hard times for many and WWII was terrible but...... there was a solidarity and so many beautiful singers and great bands. Young people just enjoyed music, dancing and being together. I am grateful that her music lives on and so many younger people can appreciate it. A beautiful recording, this. Thank you.

Thanks so much for posting this! I rediscovered it when Rod Stewart did it a few years ago. I've been singing this to my daughter since she was baby almost 4 years ago. My dad used to sing it when I was kid. Brings back a lot of nice memories and I can never listen to it without tears in my eyes.

Only a few performers "owned" the songs they recorded...Bing Crosby,"White Christmas", Peggy Lee, "Fever"...and Jo Stafford,"Long Ago and Far Away"...her voice spoke directly to the hearts of the men fighting overseas in WWII...miles and years from their loved ones.

Jo Stafford at her best.

Right on the mark. Much of today's music is garbage. This is great music, also a great time in American history.

I have left a couple of responses to this song and i can't stop listening to it. I'm 43 years old and I can't help wishing I lived in this era. I fear it may be gone forever. I truly hope I am wrong. It was the greatest generation!

Great singers never pass away as long as the recordings are still around. I can remember listening to Jo,Patti,The Andrew Sisters to name a few.with while in high school. A buddy had an old Ford rumble seat roaster that a tube type radio, we had to keep the engine running to keep the battery charged otherwise the radio would drain the battery. The girls we dated loved parking in the moonlight and listening to the great singers and songs of the 40s and 50s. What evengreen memories. Thanks |
