petrol engines have throttles, diesels have govenors.

Diesels DONT have throttles, petrol engines do.On a diesel engine, YOU control the speed of the engine by increasing the amount of diesel that gets injected directly, the more you press the acellerator the larger measure of diesel is injected hence more power.

How do you think you control the speed of the engine? All engines have a throttle, otherwise we'd just be dumping fuel into the intake and hoping it didn't just stall.
