It is important to note that the South drafted poor whites into the state militias long before the war, to protect the wealthy land owners from their own slaves. The wealthy land owners were exempt from service. The southern state militias were ordered into the fight, with all the punishments of military law backing up those orders. Georgia drafted wounded soldiers sent home on medical leave, and sent those soldiers to the front lines when the pretend "Confederate" government demanded more men.
