Jason is, as James said in an interview: "Jason turned into the live guy and well, he would stop the van to sign autographs". Have huge respect for live guys more than edited voices of many other shit singers. Another thing that struck me the other day listening to some metallica stuff: James is the only voice on the records with Jason, but live Jason sings back. And when it's time for backing-vocals on the records it's like double-james doing lead and backing vocals. Correct me if I'm wrong.
