Gilmour was originally a "quasi-replacement" for Syd. The band originally wanted to have Syd assume a "Brian Wilson-type" role where he would be in the studio but not on the road. Well, we all know it didn't work out that way. They just didn't pick Syd up for a gig and thatwas the end of it.

Do teens today like to do drugs while jamming to Floyd like we did back in the day?

There weren't intentions of any sort, though. They had a concert to do and a voice to fill. What happened was natural. Gilmore was a natural and fit the sound perfectly. It morphed into the PF we know today, with Gimore as a part of its base.
