God damn this guy is bloody good. Not a bum note, perfect toungueing. He also seems like a really nice guy as well.

Not to knock Wynton, but Mendez performs it on an "ordinary" Bb trumpet, whereas Marsalis and most modern performers will play it on the shorter Eb which gives them more security in the upper register, and a sweeter sound. So, when you compare Mendez to Marsalis remember that Mendez is working much harder to produce his fine performance, and that the recorded sound is not as flattering.

Holy shit! I love this solo! I performed this in high school. Rafael is incredible on this, and all other, performances!

Yea! Mr Mendez's interpretation is good, but with Wynton's, I tend to sense more of his feeling and emotion. Their both great musicians no doubt, I just prefer Wynton's version better.
