I have an escort wagon of the same vintage. I took it on a 302 mile trip in Michigan and got 39.5 MPG, all while hauling a 17' sea kayak on top and a whole bunch of camping gear. You don't need pvc pipes full of water under your hood to get good mileage, you just need a well maintained mid nineties 4 cyl. and good driving habits. I really mean the mid nineties stuff. I had a 2004 Focus and it could get 30-31 at the absolute best w/o the boat on top.

dhgmust: A repost because some enviromentalist jackass didn't think his opinion was important.

We need to start drilling for oil offshore now, because the sooner we do, the sooner we will have more domestic oil. There are more than 250,000,000 registered vehicles in the United States. These gas burners aren't going away overnight. They will have to be phased out over not years, but decades. Let's go for alternative fuels, but let's be realistic about the time frame! High fuel prices hit the poor, elderly and middle class the hardest! Cancel your vacation Congress and act now!

Not sure what you mean... "60 MPG Escort Wagon" is all I see. I'm not doubting your figures, I am just saying you should do more testing in a way that would show a more accurate count. This would entail running longer or metering the fuel accurately say perhaps by installing a one gallon tank to run from. Now I am not sure if you have a fuel pump in your tank or machanical on the engine. Of course the mechanical pump would be easier to do the test with.

Not a very accurate test (ime). Run the tank out and fill it up - or - meter a gallon directly and drive the car till it stops.

The truth hurts, just that much more, when one poses an ignorant question.

Well said.
For those considering buying a new vehicle, don't forget to check out the new 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Great for adventures off road, just for cruising around town, or running to the store.

The new 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser seats five and comes in two-tone with a Voodoo Blue, Titanium Metallic, Black Diamond, Sun Fusion, Sandstorm or Brick body color and White top. The interior fabric color is Dark Charcoal, while the dash, center instrument panel trim and the door inserts match the body.
