he lusts scarlett, but loves his wife. However, scarlett gets pregnant. His wife has a rich family, and he knows he has a secure job and wealth with the woman he loves, and the fact she is pregnant could ruin this. So he shoots her. There are small subplots based on luck aswell, its a really good film, i'd recommend it. Clever ending.
