this is whats dumb about nintendo. they make changing the covers too hard. should it be as easy as snapping them on and off?

In all honesty, it is not a complicated procedure by any means. If you have an elementary (or not even) how electronics fit together you can do it. But like I always remind, you are taking it apart (with minor dis-conecting of wires) And there is a possibility something could go wrong. It would be little different from taking apart a computer case to change the fan.message me if you have any more questions.
