t-racks is a bit boomy for my style of music. I like the L2 series from waves.

Some of my favourite equipment: Sonalksis SV-315, iZotope Ozone, Acon Media StudioRebirth, CamelPhat, T-RackS.. that should get you started with mixing & mastering. And of course Boost11

i've noticed sometimes people record stuff with too much bass or left leaning midrange and it sounds so awful

Sunset, When recording your initial tracks indivdually you should never record them at maximum level even if they are not peaking, your meter should always be mid strip, why? because this will give you more room in the final Master channel for your Mix prior to exporting. once your pre mix is ready (with all channel levels hitting around mid level) you can add on mastering fx such as this one shown above which will work better for you with more room in the master channel, hope this helps mate.
